It's no secret that when Fender Rhodes changed to Rhodes, the insides of the piano changed (and not for the better).

Fender Rhodes were built with Hard Rock Maple on the action rail, the harp supports and half of the hammers.

With this change the heart of the Fender Rhodes tone disappeared, gone was that dead, wood punch, that solid earthy tone that was pure and powerful.

Rhodes threw away the tone-full wood and introduced aluminum action rails, aluminum harp supports and all plastic hammers. This created a weaker sound that allowed false harmonics to resonate with the aluminum that the wood never allowed; with the wood notes were pure and dead. When was the last time you saw a musical instrument being built out of aluminum and plastic?
